Strategic Games and Chess

Entering Grades 3-8
Week 2: 6/17-6/21

Come play some of the greatest board games of all time! Chess, the game of kings. Othello, Dominion, Hive, Ascension, Yinsh. These are just some of the many competitive strategy games we will be learning and mastering. Expert chess coaches will teach new players how to move the pieces, as well as bring seasoned players to the next level of competition. With the bounty of great strategy board games out there, we know there is a board game for everyone. Campers will also get to participate each day in Camp Shalom’s morning song circle, and go swimming every afternoon.

Eco-Explorers

Entering Grades K-3
Week 1: 6/10-6/14

Young biologists use all their senses when they explore the natural world around them. Have fun finding and magnifying nature’s smallest creatures, pour plaster casts of animal tracks, make recycled paper, and more. Discover how birds thrive and solve the mystery of what Mr. Owl ate for lunch. Make and take home something every day like a cell model, a creature habitat and more fun stuff! Campers will also get to participate each day in Camp Shalom’s morning song circle, and go swimming every afternoon.

Eureka! Young Inventors

Entering Grades 2-6
Week 4: 7/1-7/5 (no camp 7/4)

Creative Contraption Warning! This Mad Science camp is designed by you — the Inventor! Each day you’ll be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – your imagination. With a little bit of ingenuity, you’ll construct catapults and forts, then lay siege to the castle. Assemble your own working lightsaber to take home! Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, but this camp is 100% fun! Campers will also get to participate each day in Camp Shalom’s morning song circle, and go swimming every afternoon.

“Fizz”-ical Phenomena & Che-Mystery

Entering Grades K-3
Week 7: 7/22-7/26

Have a ton of fun as we whip up potions and experiment with all kinds of chemical reactions, including growing our own crystals, making sidewalk chalk, and learning the science of chromatography on a Mad Science Lab Coat we get to keep! Mix it up as we experiment with molecular madness, radical reactions, and “fizz”-ical and chemical reactions. Discover what those crazy chemists are really up to in their laboratories!

*Please note: “Fizz”-ical Phenomena & Che-Mystery campers will participate in “Fizz”-ical Phenomena & Che-Mystery activities in the morning, and then filter into traditional day camp in the afternoon.

NASA Journey Into Outer Space

Entering Grades K-3
Week 8: 7/29-8/2

Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in this new voyage of discovery. See the principles of thrust and propulsion at work as we explore the atmosphere on earth and beyond! Watch stardust burn, and journey through a galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars. Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour. Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light as you learn about space phenomena. This is an experience that is truly out of this world!

*Please note: NASA Journey Into Outer Space campers will participate in NASA Journey activities in the morning, and then filter into traditional day camp in the afternoon.

Reactions in Action

Entering Grades 1-5
Week 6: 7/15-7/19

Junior Mad Scientists dive into the realms of the Chemical and Physical world in this crazy week of non-stop action and reaction! Kids explore our wonderlab to find eggs that don’t break and ice that doesn’t melt, and discover how to freeze time! Our young chemists perform spectacular hands-on experiments and continue the fun at home with the gadgets they’ve designed in the lab. Campers will also get to participate each day in Camp Shalom’s morning song circle, and go swimming every afternoon.

STEAM

Entering Grades K-3
Week 9: 8/5-8/9

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. In this thought-provoking camp, you will experience the forces of the earth with your own hand-made devices. We will be creating catapults, crossbows, helicopters, air cannons, and more with common household equipment to not just learn about physics, but to experience physics. We will build our own structures and devices and have friendly competitions as we strive to create the best inventions to use the forces of the world around us, and learn how important those forces are.

*Please note: STEAM campers will participate in STEAM activities in the morning, and then filter into traditional day camp in the afternoon.

Tinkering + Coding (now offering two different sessions!)

Tinkering + Coding

Entering Grades K-3
Week 4: 7/1-7/5 (no camp July 4)

Discover how games are made with our exciting coding/Tynker class. Students will learn the basics of block coding, and by the end of the week, students will have created their own program to share at home. Fun activities will simulate how computers send and receive data, and cover a wide range of general topics, like how a computer works and what the languages of computers are. We will be learning how line coding works with fun, interactive games that challenge students to find solutions to fun and interesting puzzles. No previous experience required.

*Please note: Tinkering + Coding campers will participate in Tinkering + Coding activities in the morning, and then filter into traditional day camp in the afternoon.

Tinkering + Coding

Entering Grades 2-8
Week 5: 7/8-7/12

Video games, computer games, cell phone games; there are so many games out there to play and enjoy. Have you thought about creating your own game? Using an online resource that students can work with while at home, our class will give students the tools they need to create their own online games. Over the course of the week, students will learn to use block coding to create their own web-browser based games and collaborate to experience what a game design team does to bring us the games we enjoy.

*Please note: Tinkering + Coding campers will participate in Tinkering + Coding activities in the morning, and then filter into traditional day camp in the afternoon.
