Sabra campers are full of ruach (spirit) and Camp Shalom energy! Sabra campers get to enjoy arts and crafts, science and nature, games and sports, special events, and weekly field trips! Campers will swim every day that they are on site, including two days per week of organized lessons with certified swim instructors. Sabra is the Hebrew word for prickly pear (a kind of sweet cactus fruit) and it’s also the term for a native Israeli.
Sabra is for campers who will be entering 1st-2nd grades in the fall.

Campers at Camp Shalom get into the pool almost every day! We believe access to the APJCC’s beautiful outdoor pool is part of what makes Camp Shalom unique! Our outstanding aquatics facility and staff allows campers to enjoy and explore the water safely under close supervision of Red Cross Certified lifeguards.
Sabra campers swim every day, except for some field trip Wednesdays. Two days per week consist of organized, instructional swim are led by certified swim instructors. The rest of the week is spent playing in the pool for open swim. Campers will be swim checked for safety and to ensure proper instruction.
- 100% camper participation is encouraged but not required (an alternate activity will not be provided).
- Campers who choose not to swim will spend time supervised in the shaded areas of the pool deck.
- Pack a swimsuit and towel every day.
- Shoes must be worn to and from the pool. Campers can pack sandals for this purpose.
Did you know? The JCC pool is heated to 82° year round!
Campers will enjoy field trips throughout the summer. Field trips are based on the weekly theme and offer campers new experiences away from the regular camp setting.
All field trips are on Wednesdays.
The field trip schedule for summer 2019 will be announced soon. Last year’s (summer 2018) field trip destinations included CuriOdyssey, Magical Bridge Playground, The Tech Museum, Alameda County Fair, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (for mini golf and laser tag), Happy Hollow, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the movies.
Cost per 2-week session of Sabra is $740 JCC members, $880 non-members.
There is an additional fee for Extended Care.
The JCC youth lounge, Club J, is home to Camp Shalom’s Extended Care. Come join the fun after camp with rock climbing, light up walls, reading corner, arts and crafts, and much more!
