Katan for Preschoolers
Beginning with toddlers (18 months by June 17th, 2024) and going up through children entering kindergarten (5 years old by September 1st, 2024), Katan welcomes our youngest campers to a fun and nurturing summer experience! Children enjoy developmentally appropriate, engaging activities including art, tactile exploration, music, outdoor water play, and more, all led by our team of highly qualified and experienced preschool teachers! Special onsite events include bounce houses, dance parties, animal programs, guest entertainers, and all-Katan Shabbat. Campers ages 3-5 participate in weekly recreational swim, staffed by our certified lifeguards.
Campers are divided into classes by age group, and adhere to the following ratios:
- 18 months by June 17th – 1:4 teacher to child ratio
- 2 yrs old by June 17th – 1:6 teacher to child ratio
- 3 yrs old by Sept. 1st – 1:8 teacher to child ratio
- 4 yrs old by Sept. 1st – 1:9 teacher to child ratio
- 5 yrs old by Sept. 1st 1:9 teacher to child ratio (see ‘Rising Kindergarteners’ tab below for special options for 5 year olds)

Session 1: June 17th- July 19th, 2024 (no camp June 19th, July 4th, & July 5th)
Session 2: July 22nd- August 15th, 2024
By offering longer, multiple-week sessions, we are able to provide our youngest campers a sense of stability, consistency and ownership of their environment, as well as facilitate deeper bonding and relationship building with their peers and teachers. Operating Hours
Katan starts at 8:30 am and ends at 12:00 pm for half-day camps, at 4:00 pm for full-day camps, or at 5:30 pm for extended day camps. Early morning care is available beginning at 7:30am.

Katan Office: The preschool camp office is open 8:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

There is a $250 per-session, non-refundable deposit due upon enrollment. Remaining balance for Session 1 is due June 15th, 2024. Remaining balance for Session 2 is due July 15th, 2024.

Katan is licensed by the state of California and operates as part of the APJCC Preschool. The staffing is separate from the 1st-10th grade camp staffing.
Many of our APJCC Preschool teachers serve as Katan counselors. Our special staff is carefully selected for their superior educational background, professional experience, and warmth and sensitivity to young children.

Please note: If you’re signing up a child who has never been enrolled in the APJCC Preschool or Camp Shalom, then please fill out the forms for “First-Time Campers.” If your child has been enrolled in the APJCC Preschool and/or Camp Shalom in the past, please fill out the forms for “Returning and Current Campers.” Even if they’ve never been to camp before, if they’ve been enrolled in the APJCC Preschool, you can fill out the “Returning and Current Camper” forms.
Children who are entering Kindergarten in the 2024-25 school year may either enroll in the Katan Preschool Program, or Camp Shalom’s school-aged program.
Katan: Join the 5-year-old age group at the APJCC Preschool’s summer program, Katan, which is being offered in two sessions: June 17th- July 19th, and July 22th- August 15th (proration of the second session is available for children who return to school prior to Aug. 15th). This program is run by our fully qualified preschool educators, and is the right fit for children who thrive with consistency and the opportunity to be in a stable group of peers and a more structured program. For this option, you can register for half-day (8:30am-12:00pm), full-day (8:30am-4:00pm) or extended day (8:30am-5:30pm).
Camp Shalom: Our summer camp for school-aged children is a more fast-paced program, offering enrollment by the week from June 10th- August 16th for those entering Kindergarten. This option is led by summer camp counselors, and is a great fit for children who are more mature and can keep up with a busy activity-filled day and new peers each week. Camp Shalom runs 9:00am-4:00pm daily, with the option to add Extended Care from 4:00pm-6:00pm.
